GfK will nurture auto tech innovation in hackathon competition for undergraduates

Student teams will combine marketing, data science as they vie for $5,000 prize

NEW YORK, NY, UNITED STATES, October 31, 2019 /EINPresswire.com/ — According to GfK AutoMobility, more than half of those who intend to buy a new car say that in-vehicle technology could affect their selection. To give aspiring data scientists and marketer researchers hands-on experience with this fast-growing category, GfK is challenging undergraduate teams to create business plans – from design to marketing – for their own “smart car” innovations.

In the second NextGen Data Science Hackathon Competition, GfK will award a $5,000 grand prize to the team that develops and presents the most convincing plan for a new in-car device or service.

Watch a video about the NextGen Data Science Hackathon Competition

During a 10-day hackathon in March, GfK will give students access to data sets from a variety of sources, encouraging the teams to use these and other insights in creating 5-minute presentations for their ideas. GfK insights experts, as well as marketers and researchers from client companies, will act as mentors and, ultimately, select the winning team.

Interested students should contact marketing@gfk.com

Before the hackathon, students — working individually or in groups – can collect insights to focus their projects and provide background for their final presentations. Undergraduate students in any major can take part in the event, working from any location.

“Smart technology has revolutionized the auto marketplace – from in-car entertainment systems to self-driving vehicles – and we know there is much more to come,” said Tom Neri, Commercial Director at GfK North America and leader of its AutoMobility research team. “The potential for breakthrough innovation is still huge, and we know that the NextGen teams will bring a powerful curiosity and creativity to this category. We also see this as a valuable opportunity to connect today’s product designers and marketers with the next wave of innovative thinkers.”

The NextGen Competition began in 2011 with a focus on traditional research methods and goals. Over the years, the contest has evolved to reflect the changing toolkit and role of market researchers and data scientists. In 2018, GfK made a hackathon the centerpiece of the competition, with a team from the College of Staten Island (City University of New York) taking first place for its innovative development and marketing plan for a new smart speaker.

Linode Continues To Simplify Cloud Computing, Launches Object Storage

A green icon in the shape of an L with the company name Linode alongside it

The Largest Independent Open Cloud Provider

We built Linode Object Storage to make storing unstructured data as easy as clicking a button”

— Will Smith, Principal Developer

PHILADELPHIA, PA, USA, October 30, 2019 /EINPresswire.com/ — Linode, the world’s largest independent open cloud provider, today announced a new Object Storage product, giving developers a simpler, more efficient way to store and access unstructured data in the cloud.

Linode Object Storage continues the company’s mission to accelerate innovation by making cloud computing simpler, more affordable, and accessible to all. Developers can provision and manage Linode Object Storage directly from the developer-friendly Linode Cloud Manager. The S3-compatible storage solution eliminates the need for companies to manage their own custom infrastructure, allowing them to store thousands of objects across a cluster of Linode servers for high availability and durability, while enjoying the industry’s best price to performance ratio as their data grows.

“Data continues to expand at an incredible rate and shows no signs of letting up,” said Will Smith, principal developer at Linode. “As it expands, the type of data companies are challenged to manage becomes more complex, more costly, and, ultimately, more critical to the success of their business. We built Linode Object Storage to alleviate that complexity and cost by making storing that data as easy as clicking a button.”

More than 40 zettabytes of data are expected to be generated by 2020, according to analyst firm IDC. 80 percent of that data will be unstructured, emanating from the billions of devices we carry and use every day and the tens of billions of endpoints that fuel the ever-expanding Internet of things.

The challenges of managing unstructured data are one of the reasons developers have embraced object storage for data that doesn’t change often, such as image hosting and static websites, to more advanced, data-intensive uses like artificial intelligence and machine learning. Because all objects are stored in a flat, scalable manner replicated across multiple servers, object storage solutions like Linode Object Storage, scale more easily than traditional block-based storage which acts like a hard drive and requires attachment to a host server.

Linode Object Storage is available today. Existing customers will see the new feature when they log into their Cloud Manager. To celebrate the launch of Linode Object Storage, the company is giving new customers free credit for four months of cloud service when they use the code OBJECT20 during sign up.

For more information and to see additional object storage use cases, check out Linode’s helpful documentation at https://www.linode.com/docs/platform/object-storage/object-storage-use-cases/

Robocall Solution Testing and Validation Methodology released by Mind Commerce

Robocall Solution Testing Methodology

Sees Need for Industry Consensus around Metrics, Procedures, and Benchmarking

Contact Mind Commerce for more Information about the Robocall Testing Methodology and Unwanted Call Management Framework at (206) 395-9205”

— Mind Commerce

SEATTLE, WASHINGTON, UNITED STATES, October 29, 2019 /EINPresswire.com/ — In a world trending towards non-voice communications, ICT research and consulting firm, Mind Commerce, is working to identify how to best preserve the integrity of voice calling. The company has recently published its initial robocall solution testing and validation methodology, which the firm has independently developed and plans to use for testing the performance of smartphone apps used by consumers to identify unwanted robocalls.

The primary objective of the methodology is to provide a basis for determination of robocall management performance. This includes mitigating the impact of unwanted robocalls as well as not impeding wanted calls, such as business calls from legitimate business operations. Mind Commerce sees this work as critical if the telecommunications industry is to maintain voice calls as a viable means of communications.

Two primary areas of focus for unwanted robocall solution testing are Identification Rate of Unwanted Calls and Error Rate of Wanted Calls. Identification Rate reflects how accurately a solution identifies unwanted calls and Error Rate represents the extent to which solutions erroneously identify calls as unwanted that are actually wanted calls from legitimate businesses. With robocalls continuing to hit telecommunications networks, there is a need for unwanted call management solutions to allow consumers to avoid unwanted robocalls as well as facilitate the identification of wanted calls.

While the creation of this initial methodology is a big step forward, Mind Commerce recognizes there is more work to be done. The company’s founder, Gerry Christensen, stated “This methodology provides an initial framework to conduct testing and validation, but it is not perfect as we need additional participation from industry constituents” Mr. Christensen referenced the company’s advocacy to develop an industry body it refers to as an Unwanted Call Management Framework (UCMF). Contact Mind Commerce to learn more about the UCMF and inquire about participation.

Mind Commerce defines the UCMF as a recently established industry body, formed to assist the telecommunications industry with respect to unwanted robocalls. The UCMF consists of Members, Steering Committee, and Advisors who share the same goal of determining the effectiveness of tools used to mitigate unwanted robocalls while preserving the ability for wanted calls to be answered by consumers.

The initial methodology available from Mind Commerce represents the current approach to testing and validation. It is subject to change pending direction from the UCMF group and/or other industry constituents including communications service providers. The company is open to discussion about its methodology and is encouraging all industry constituents to share their views.

It is difficult to arrive at meaningful conclusions in absence of agreement regarding key metrics including nomenclature, definitions, and what is to be tested and validated. In terms of nomenclature, it is known that different vendor solutions have varying ways in which they describe a problematic call such as scam vs. fraud.

Accordingly, one of the most important goals of the UCMF is to identify definitions and importance for key metrics such as “Unwanted Call”, “Wanted Call”, and “Critical Call”. In addition, there are some gray areas such as calls from ethical, lawful businesses that follow the rules, but are sometimes treated as “unwanted”. For example, law-abiding callers do not want to be labeled as "nuisance" or "spam" calls. Leading unwanted call management solutions take into account the need to both identify unwanted robocalls as well as facilitate the opportunity for wanted calls to be answered.
