County Continues Cooperation With Appraisal Board
GASTONIA, N.C. – In 2022, Gaston County identified land that was in a critical, centralized location to house a unified public safety campus. That campus would provide updated and centralized facilities for the county’s police, emergency management, telecommunications and emergency medical services.
Gaston County, as part of standard due diligence, hired a third-party appraiser to evaluate three parcels of property at 803 N. Oakland St., in central Gastonia. The appraiser, Dr. J. Craig Julian, put the appraised value of those parcels at $7.5 million. The county paid that amount to purchase the property in early 2023.
Following an evaluation of the methods used by Dr. Julian, the Board of Commissioners directed the County to file a complaint with the North Carolina Appraisal Board last Spring. The Appraisal Board voted to find probable cause of a violation earlier this year on the part of Dr. Julian, and the case is now awaiting a hearing.
The public safety campus is currently in the design phase of the process.
