Burlington County Commissioners Commend Dispatchers Who Assisted With Baby Deliveries

The Burlington County Commissioners honored three Public Safety Central Communications telecommunicators for helping to deliver three newborn babies during separate maternity calls earlier this summer.

Public Safety Telecommunicators Ashley Seigel, Erica Warrick, and Christine Gilbert were recognized during Wednesday night’s Commissioners’ meeting for their calm, professional actions during maternity calls on June 27, July 25, and August 28.

Seigel assisted with two of the deliveries while she was undergoing emergency medical dispatcher training under Gilbert’s guidance. Warrick was the dispatcher who aided with the third delivery.

“Public Safety Telecommunicators are typically unseen, but their service is essential for keeping all of us safe, and these three maternity cases are prime examples of the heroics our dispatchers are called upon to perform,” said Burlington County Commissioner Deputy Director Allison Eckel, liaison to the County Department of Public Safety. “The dispatchers provided calm, steady voices the mothers and their families desperately needed, and their guidance helped bring three babies into the world. Their actions reflect the best of our Central Communications Center and deserve to be recognized.”

The June 27 delivery happened during the early morning hours when a Chesterfield family called 911 to report a woman in labor. Two minutes into the call, Seigel was able to talk the family through the delivery of a baby girl. Police and emergency medical service personnel arrived shortly after the delivery and transported the mother and baby to an area hospital.

Seigel was still in training on July 25 when she fielded another call from a Willingboro woman in labor at home. With Gilbert’s guidance, she was able to help the caller deliver a healthy baby boy.

Warrick assisted with the August 28 delivery. A pregnant Evesham woman called 911 at 7:07 p.m. and reported she was in labor. Warrick provided guidance over the phone, and the baby was delivered at 7:14 p.m., just before police officers and EMS personnel arrived at the home.

The Commissioners presented all three telecommunicators with County Certificates of Recognition in honor of their calm actions during the three maternity calls. Seigel and Warrick were also presented “stork pins” for assisting with the deliveries.

Seigel joined Central Communications about a year ago. She has completed her emergency medical dispatch training and is now training to serve on Central’s Fire Dispatch desk. Warrick has 18 years of service at Central Communications, and Gilbert has served there for more than 36 years.

“Burlington County Central Communications is one of our most important public safety resources, and the dispatchers deserve all the praise and accolades we can extend to them for their service,” said Commissioner Randy Brolo. “Their cool assistance helped Burlington County welcome its newest residents to the world and should make our entire county proud.”

The Burlington County Central Communications center fields 911 emergency calls and dispatches police, fire, and EMS to all 40 county towns. Last year, Central fielded more than 1 million 911 emergency calls and dispatched 771,000 police incidents, 37,113 fire calls, and 70,605 EMS calls/medical emergencies.
